Why Locals Love Tokio Tonic
Nestled in the heart of Bukit Bintang’s vibrant nightlife district, Tokio Tonic offers an exceptional modern izakaya experience that blends traditional Japanese flavors with innovative culinary twists. This sleek and inviting restaurant creates the perfect retreat from the bustling streets of Changkat Bukit Bintang, promising a relaxed yet lively atmosphere where guests can unwind and savor each bite and sip with equal delight.
The menu at Tokio Tonic is a carefully curated journey through contemporary Japanese fusion cuisine. Start with refreshing salads such as the Garden Greens with Jellyfish—a tantalizing combination of jellyfish, pomelo, and crisp cucumber that dances on the palate with subtle sesame oil and rice vinegar dressing. For something heartier, the Mushroom and Asparagus Salad delivers earthy aromas and a light ponzu dressing that perfectly balances the robust umami of assorted mushrooms.
Diners who seek indulgence will find the desserts irresistible. The Matcha Chocolate Pie pairs the creamy depth of three rich chocolates with delicate, bittersweet matcha cream, while the Red Bean Cheesecake offers a silky texture with a nostalgic touch of sweet azuki bean paste—an elegant fusion of Western and Japanese sweetness.
What truly elevates the Tokio Tonic experience, however, is their thoughtful beverage selection. The highballs standout here, delivering smooth, refreshing cocktails prepared with precision. While some guests have noted the large ice cubes may dilute the drink slightly, the balance and flavor remain sophisticated and enjoyable, especially when paired with their signature thin fries—crisp, lightly salted, and perfectly complemented by a delectable dipping sauce that keeps you reaching for more.
The overall ambiance feels like a hidden gem amidst the urban energy outside. Despite its central location, Tokio Tonic offers a peaceful, intimate setting ideal for conversations and relaxed dining. The warmth of the staff and attentive service further enhance this comfortable environment, making it a perfect spot not just for a late-night bite but a memorable dining experience with friends or loved ones.
Whether you’re a fan of classic ramen—like their well-crafted seafood or tonkatsu options—or eager to explore innovative bites such as the sashimi pizza praised for its surprising harmony, Tokio Tonic promises culinary delights that keep patrons coming back. While the restaurant is relatively new and evolving, guests consistently commend its quality and the refreshing approach to Japanese fusion dining in Kuala Lumpur.
For those seeking a blend of vibrant flavors, uniquely crafted cocktails, and a laid-back atmosphere right in the heart of Bukit Bintang, Tokio Tonic is an essential destination. It skillfully balances the lively street spirit with an oasis of calm, delivering an izakaya experience that’s both contemporary and authentically satisfying.

Their highballs taste nice, but alcohol too diluted, as the ice is huge. Only worthy if the restaurant proposes online discount. Their thin fries is our favorite, not oily and served with a delicious dipping sauce. The fried tofu is good, but without the sweet dipping sauce. The seafood ramen broth doesn’t look like the photos posted by other people when this restaurant was opened this year. The broth taste is quite weird, we cannot identify what ingredient is used that is even stronger than the shrimp taste. The seafood is fresh and portion of noodles is generous. Price of food is in line with the Changkat street. Service is attentive, under the presence of the lady supervisor.

After walking up and down a busy stretch of street.. We decided to try this place.. With only a few customers. It provided a peaceful environment to communicate with those around the table although the streets remained busy with a loud music and a very vibrant night life on a Friday evening. My menu was easy to understand as a person from a another country... I ordered a classic pizza and a pressed lime to drink.. Everything I ordered was great... The waitor was helpful. There were two djs playing music during the time we were there.. The music was surprising..from the 90s..it all added to a very unique experience they I will never forget

If you want a delicious cocktail and great service in a relaxed location this is a great find. We can’t believe that you don’t have to queue or book to get a table. Still in the heart of the buzzy nightlife but a lovely relaxed feeling and high quality drinks at a very reasonable price. P.s. get yourselves on trip advisor - a great find.

It is new Japanese fusion restaurant in their soft launch, official opening on 1 August. Had the tasting menu came in good variety. Cold appetizers is good, the king prawn ramen is superb but the iberico katsu was a bit disappointed as it is slightly overcooked and dry. Service is great and the staff explained to dishes, just I would prefer him wearing a mask while talking towards the dishes. Well, I never care in such detail but after the pandemic this becoming a concern. Andreas is friendly and receptive over our comments. Overall it is a good dining experience. All the best to the grand opening!

Beautiful decoration and atmosphere in changkat at this new restaurant. The best of the shareable bites were the crab croquettes, closely followed by the sashimi pizza. The sashimi blended much better with the pizza than I thought it would I do recommend. For mains I had the tonkatsu ramen which is as good as any other ramen around KL, maybe lacking in unique ingredients. The pork was a little tough so I rate the main at 4 stars instead of 5.

I just popped in as I was too early for the Dining in the dark reservation above their place. The staff were extremely kind, therefore I decided to order a snack as well as an orange juice. The best orange juice in KL so far, the edamame was a bit too spicy for me. I was planning to stopped by again after dinner just to give them some business, pity that I was so stuffy. Maybe next time.

Japanese yoshoku or western styled fusion food. I liked the Iberico katsu a lot. Fried to crispy perfection and the meat was thick yet tender and juicy. Delicious. The restaurant is part of the Werners group which has pork restaurants like El Cerdo across the street.

I came across Highball on social media, and their posts caught my attention. After seeing their great Google reviews, I decided to give it a try—and I have no regrets! The atmosphere was fantastic, with Andy curating an impressive music selection. The food and drinks were absolutely excellent, and the Highball was just the right taste for me. I’ll definitely be coming back!
